Class Description

This course introduces the science of remote sensing and methods of digital image processing. Remote sensing is the art and science of obtaining information about an object without being in direct physical contact with the object. It is a scientific technology that can be used to measure and monitor biophysical characteristics on Earth. Principles of radiation and energy - matter interactions will lay the foundation for remote sensing. The course will introduce the concepts of data acquisition via remote sensors, sensor technology and the digital processing of remotely sensed digital imagery. Digital image processing will include radiometric and geometric correction, image enhancement and pattern recognition as well as accuracy assessment concepts and procedures.

The course will include lectures, computer exercises, and student project presentations at the end of the semester.

Software:
Leica Geosystems ERDAS IMAGINE 9.1

Prerequisites and Recommendations:

Introductory GIS course and basic statistics is recommended. It is required that students without previous experience with GIS or statistics invest extra time to get familiar with basic GIS concepts such as data types and geographic projection during the first 2 weeks of the course. Personal computer and application software competency is essential.
