How do I find GIS Data Sources?

If you don’t find what you need using FIU’s MIUS Data Search or the list below, some Internet research may be able to help you locate GIS data sources. Here are a few suggestions for searching GIS data sources:

  • What type of data are you looking for? Population? Elevation? Climate?
  • What area is the data for? World? Latin America? Peru?
  • Include some GIS keywords like “shapefile” or “download” in your search.

U.S. government agencies or non-profit groups also publish a lot of free data that may not be available through the Geodata.gov site or other similar sites.  It also helps to think about the government agency or organization that would publish data on a specific topic and search their name plus the type of data you are looking for.
