Background and Introduction
FIU Library Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) Center was established in 1995 with the support of FIU library, Academic Affairs, and Division of Sponsored Research and Training. Since then, the center has grown tremendously. Currently, it supports research and teaching from many academic units in the areas of computerized cartography, GIS, RS, 3-D visualization, and spatial statistical analysis and modeling. Supported by the FIU GIS Advisory Committee (Chair: Dr. Dean Whitman, Earth Sciences, Co-Chair, and Dr. Fang Zhao, Civil Engineering), the GIS Coordinator of GIS-RS Center, Jennifer Fu, is also the chairperson of a graduate, professional level Certificate in Geographic Information Systems, and the Center hosts all the GIS, RS courses required by the Certificate.
