2002 GIS Showcase
The annual 2002
GIS Showcase is hosted by Florida International University Library
GIS-RS Center. This year we are focusing on the following tracks:
A) Interactive mapping
and spatial data delivery via WWW
B) GIS in Urban Planning and Demographic Economic Analysis
C) Environmental Research and Engineering
D) 3D and Spatial Modeling and Visualization
While most of our
speakers and presenters are FIU faculty and graduate students, we do have
a guest speaker, Dr. Kathleen Sullivan from University of Miami. Many
county and local agencies will be participating in forms of posters and
e-demos.
Highlights of activities
- Host of a South
Florida Geo-Spatial Data Depository (http://gislab.fiu.edu/search):
Upon the initiatives of Federal Geo-spatial Data Committee (FGDC), the
GIS-RS has developed a Geo-Spatial Data Depository with FGDC Compliant
Metadata and a SQL and ColdFusion based Web Search Engine. This on-line
geo-spatial database has benefited the South Florida scientific community
and the general public a great deal, with its user friendly interface,
accessibility of raw data, descriptiveness of metadata records, and
most importantly, scope of contents including selected South Florida
vegetation coverages, landuse/landcover, 1-foot resolution aerials,
LandSAT images, hyper spectrum LIDAR data, TIGER/Line Files, networks
and communications, water/sewers, property and tax appraisals, public
facilities, etc.
- Contracts and Grants:
The year of 2000-2001, the Center has totaled $90,000 contracts and
grants from City of Miami, USGS, and other private sectors. Jennifer
Fu, is the Co-PI of a $375,000 City of Miami Florida East-coast Corridor
(FEC) Project. The GIS-RS Center has created and hosted a City of Miami
Community GIS Web site featuring the transportation analysis, streetscape
design, and GIS market/economic/demographic analysis of the FEC area.
(http://gislab.fiu.edu/gisrsal/frames/fec/home.html) An interactive
GIS mapping interface was designed and created for urban planner and
the public to facilitate the access spatially to land use, zoning, property
appraisal, 1-foot resolution aerials, and demographic information. In
a similar fashion, the center also participates in the 79th Street Corridor
project in collaboration with Metropolitan Center of FIU, with Dr. Ned
Murray, as the Principal Investigator.
- GIS Workshops via
University Outreach: The GIS-RS Center has developed a series of GIS
workshops for the general public. Topics include ArcView introductory
and intermediate courses, image processing using ERDAS Imagine, Spatial
Analysis using ArcView Spatial Analyst. Future courses also include
ArcView Avenue, introductions to ARC GIS, ArcIMS, and etc. Most of these
short courses will be fully available for the public in Spring 02.
